Ich Bin Ein Berliner

While standing near the Berlin Wall sixty years ago (June 26, 1963), U.S. President John F. Kennedy said "Ich bin ein Berliner" in a speech about the Cold War. For decades, many have believed it was a gaffe, because "Berliner" can translate to "jelly donut" in German. Is it true President Kennedy really said "I am a jelly donut"?
