New Harry Truman Diary Found
Friday July 11, 2003
Mistakenly catalogued as just another book in his collection, one of U.S. President Harry Truman's diaries was recently found in the stacks of the Truman Library. Since the first 160 pages are member listings for the company that originally donated the book, the book doesn't initially appear to be a diary. That is, until you flip to the back, where Truman made 42 handwritten entries in 1947. In one of the entries, Truman states that in a discussion with Eisenhower, Truman had suggested that if Douglas MacArthur decided to run for president on the Republican ticket, then Eisenhower should run for president on the Democratic ticket and have Truman as his running mate. In another revealing entry, Truman wrote that he finds Jews "very, very selfish." Though there are lots of interesting passages, be sure to check out the entries for January 3, July 21, July 25, and July 26.
