Crew of WWII Bomber Finally Laid to Rest
Tuesday July 15, 2003
On January 29, 1944, a British Lancaster was shot down during a night bombing mission over Berlin in World War II. However, the body of only one missing crewmaen was found. The plane itself and the remaining crewmen remained missing until an amateur German historian accidentally found the wreckage while searching for another plane in 1997. Because of the extensive damage to the plane, it took a mixture of detective work and some luck to identify the plane and its crew. The remains of the two British and four Australian crewmen were finally laid to rest today (July 15) after having been missing for nearly 60 years.
