Mother of Last Russian Tsar to Be Reburied

Saturday October 18, 2003
Empress-Dowager Maria Fedorovna, the mother of Russian Tsar Nicholas II, will be exhumed and reburied on September 26, 2004 in a cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia. Maria Fedorovna traveled from Denmark in 1866 to Russia in order to marry Tsar Alexander III. The couple had six children together and the oldest, Nicholas, became tsar when his father died in 1894. Unfortunately, Maria Fedorovna was still in Russia when her son and his family were killed during the Russian Revolution; however, she was able to flee a year later back to Denmark, where she died in 1928. Though she was born and raised in Denmark, Maria Fedorovna wanted to be buried next to her husband. In 2004 this is going to happen.
