Protests for the Victims of the Bhopal Gas Leak
Thursday December 4, 2003
On the morning of December 3, 1984, the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India sprung a major leak. The cloud of poison drifted into Bhopal and killed 2,000 people immediately and injured approximately 600,000 more. Though Union Carbide admitted responsibility for the disaster and paid $470 million in a settlement, many of the victims have received little to no money or medical aid. The hundreds of thousands that were affected continue to have serious medical problems. Even some of the victims' children are being born with deformities. Around the world, protestors demanded medical research for the victims as well as further clean-up of the still contaminated site.
