Mussolini Founds the Fascist Party

Tuesday March 23, 2004
On March 23, 1919 Benito Mussolini founded the Fasci di Combattimento, more commonly known as the Fascist Party. Before World War I, Mussolini had been an ardent Socialist but had broken with them when he fully supported Italy's entry into World War I. In 1915, Italy did join the war and Mussolini enlisted. He was wounded and sent home in February 1917. On March 23, 1919, Mussolini gathered 100 delegates to a conference in Milan and established the Fascist Party. The Fascist Party was violently anti-Socialist, pro-nationalist, and its members wore black shirts.
