1905 Japanese Battle Flag Found
Thursday January 6, 2005
The flag flown by Japanese Admiral Heihachiro Togo during the defeat of Russia's Baltic Fleet in the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War has been recently returned to Japan. In 1911, Togo donated the 30-foot by 20-foot flag to the British warship Worcester, aboard which Togo learned seamanship as a young man. However, after the Worcester was retired, Japan lost track of the flag. The British Marine Society, which inherited the flag, carefully stored the flag and has recently agreed to permanently loan the flag to Japan, in time for the 100-year anniversary of the Russo-Japanese War.
