Mail Delivery by Missile
Wednesday June 8, 2005
Though most people take the transportation and delivery of their mail for granted, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has always been concerned about delivering mail quickly. Little known is the attempt by USPS to deliver mail by missile. A test-run was conducted on June 8, 1959 when a guided missile, containing 3.000 letters, was fired at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Mayport, Florida from the WWII submarine U.S.S. Barbero. Though the missile landed safely in the test, the reality of missile-based mail delivery was not to be.
