Maori Heads Returned
Tuesday November 15, 2005
Three Maori heads and a thigh bone are finally returning to New Zealand after spending decades in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland.
In the 19th century, there was a popular fad in Europe to collect preserved heads of the Maori people as trophies. In March 2004, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa requested the return of the three heads. On November 14, 2005, representatives of Te Papa picked up the remains and started their journey back to New Zealand. The remains will then be tested so that they can be returned to the appropriate tribe for burial.
