Statue of Secret Police Founder Restored

Monday November 21, 2005
In 1991, a crowd pulled down the statue of Felix Dzerzhinsky, which had stood in front of the police headquarters in Moscow for nearly two decades. On November 8, 2005, a bust of Dzerzhinsky was put back up. Felix Dzerzhinsky, also known as "Iron Felix," was the founder of Cheka, the first Soviet secret police agency and the precursor of the KGB. Many are concerned that the replacement of Dzerzhinsky's image is a step back toward the terror-ridden Soviet era.
