Poland Requests Auschwitz Name Change

Friday March 31, 2006
Poland is requesting that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) change the name of the Auschwitz death camp in their listing of World Heritage Sites. The change is requested from "Auschwitz Concentration Camp” to “Former Nazi German Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau” to keep anyone from being confused that the camp was Polish in origin. Auschwitz was added to the world heritage list in 1979.
