First Man on the Moon Footage Missing?

Wednesday August 16, 2006
When Neil Armstrong first stepped foot onto the surface of the moon on July 21, 1969, millions of people watched on T.V. But what people saw was not the clear footage collected by three observatories on Earth, but rather, it was grainy footage that had been adapted for television. NASA has recently realized that they no longer know where the clear, original footage is located. It is believed that in either late 1969 or 1970, the tapes from the three stations were collected at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland and then sent to the U.S. National Archives. However, when the tapes were not found at the U.S. National Archives it was thought they might have been later returned to Goddard. Embarrassed by the missing tapes, NASA is sending several staff out to search for the missing footage.
