Preserving an Internment Camp
Sunday March 2, 2008
Unlike several other Japanese-American internment camps from World War II, the one at Honouliuli in Hawaii has lain overgrown and nearly forgotten for decades. After its location was rediscovered in 2002, a pilgramage by camp survivors and their relatives was made this week to mark the 65th anniversary of the camp's opening on March 1, 1943. During the war, the U.S. confined 320 Japanese-Americans at Honouliuli, known to the internees as "hell valley." The area was purchased a year ago by the Monsanto Group and will be nominated for a place on the national register of historical places.
