Einstein Letter About God Sold
Wednesday May 21, 2008
A letter written by Albert Einstein to philosopher Eric Gutkind recently went on the auction block. The letter, written in German on January 3, 1954, reveals Einstein's unfettered thoughts on religion. Although Einstein had publicly presented himself as an agnostic who did not believe in the power of personal prayer, in the letter he described God as a "product of human weakness" and the Bible a collection of "primitive legends." The sale of the letter surprised many when the final bid was 25 times the expected sale price, selling for a total of $404,000.
