Mandela No Longer Considered a Terrorist

Monday July 7, 2008
After the African National Congress (ANC) was banned in 1960 by the apartheid government of South Africa, Nelson Mandela and other members of the ANC were placed on the United States' terrorist watch list. Since then, Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison, became president of South Africa, is considered one of the most famous human rights activists of the twentieth century, and is a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet, to the embarrassment of many, Mandela remained on the U.S. terrorist list. On July 1, 2008, President George W. Bush finally corrected this oversight by signing a bill to remove Mandela and other members of the ANC from the U.S. terrorist watch list.
