New Report on Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster

Sunday January 4, 2009
As with any disaster, we all want to know what happened, why it happened, and how to prevent it from happening again. When the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003, we all asked these very questions.

After five years of research, a new report has been issued by NASA that covers the final moments of the Space Shuttle Columbia's crew. The 400-page report states that no matter what the astronauts had done, the external forces would have been lethal. However, the report also found failings in the design and functionality of the crew's seatbelts, suits, and helmets.

It has been determined that the crew knew for 41 seconds that they did not have control of the shuttle. While trying to regain control, many of the crew members removed their gloves and none of the crew members had pulled down their visors.

For more details about the Space Shuttle Columbia crew's last moments, read the summary from CNN.
