Mobster Al Capone spent a lot of time at his retreat (located near Couderay in northern Wisconsin) during his bootlegging years. Local legend states that Capone would have planes fly in and land in the lake on his property, then unload the illegal alcohol, and take it by truck to Chicago.
After being foreclosed on in 2008, Al Capone's hideout is now for sale. The property includes a stone house, two guard towers, a caretaker's home, and a building that has most recently been used as a bar but used to be Capone's eight-car garage. Visitors to the hideout can even still find holes in some of the walls where machine guns could be placed!
Capone's hideout will be sold at auction on October 8, 2009 with a starting bid of $2.6 million. For more information about this incredible property, see this AP story.

Chippewa Valley Bank is a bunch of crooks they ended up with the property, They denied all other offers some highter and accepted one from a party that intends to tear the buildings down & slick all of the forests. What a travesty of a national & local historic property.
I thought the Lac courte Orielles (LCO) reservation bought the hideout?!
I read an article saying that a couple were in negotiations to buy the property and were asking people to donate money towards the sale directly to them. They did not buy the property. Does anyone know if they received any money, and if they did, did they return it?
