When the Nazis were going to conduct the final deportation of the Warsaw Ghetto in the spring of 1943, those remaining in the ghetto revolted. For 27 days they were able to hold off the Nazis, but the Nazis overcame the resistance when they decided to burn down every single building in the ghetto.
On Friday, October 2, 2009, Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, passed away at his home in Warsaw, Poland at age 86. After the war, Edelman remained in Poland, became a cardiologist, and wrote a book about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (The Ghetto Fights: Warsaw, 1941-43).

In Mila 18 by Leon Uris, I was moved, inspired and overcome with grief for my brothers and sisters of the Warsaw uprising. A handful of Jews against an entire Nazi division for 27 days, why does that not surprise me. thank you for this info, I will certainly read Mr. Edleman’s book.
It sickens me to think that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants everyone to believe that the Holocaust never happened. Marek Edelman had more courage in his little finger than the ruler of Iran has in his whole body. If only the world could wish Mahmoud Ahmadinejad didn’t exist and it would be true. He is a small minded, violent, disgusting little man whose demise would only be considered a tragedy by his fellow terrorists. Marek Edelman’s passing on the other hand, is a sad day for all of humanity.
Thanks for the Inf. Every new news about the Nazis shock me. Yet am happy to know that there were valiant people who resisted them knowing well that their effort is futile.Bravo Resistants….
Marek, in addition to being a great freedom fighter, was also a committed socialist and anti-Zionist to the end of his life. He was in fact denied honorary scholarships from Israeli universities because he has criticized Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. This to me is a major sign of the utter moral bankruptcy of Israel, to refuse to give recognition to a great anti-fascist hero while it veers down to the road to its own form of fascism and apartheid.
