Did Stephen Ambrose Fake Eisenhower Interviews?

By April 27, 2010

Follow me on:

While doing research at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library for an exhibit on the relationship between historian Stephen Ambrose and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Tim Rives discovered that most of the supposed interviews between the two men could not have occurred.

Stephen Ambrose, the author of Band of Brothers and many other history books, wrote a number of books about Eisenhower. Although Ambrose had said he had spent "hundreds and hundreds" of hours with Eisenhower, new research shows it may have actually been less than five hours.

Ambrose, who passed away in 2002, is obviously unable to defend himself, but the presidential records do make it look like he faked the interviews. For more about this very disturbing story, see this Guardian article.

I hate to be rude, but it’s beginning to sound like Stephen Ambrose pretty much always just made stuff up! It’s shocking that he was able to get away with this for so long.
