Although the official end of World War I was the signing of the Versailles Treaty in 1919, hostilities ended with an armistice that ended the fighting on the 11th hour of 11th day of 11th month (i.e. 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918). In November of 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared the very first "Armistice Day," which officially became a legal holiday in 1938.

After World War II saw more mass slaughter, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veteran's Day on June 1, 1954 so that it would include all veterans from all wars.
