For 100 days in 1994, the majority population in Rwanda (Hutus) slaughtered approximately 800,000 of the minority (Tutsis) in what has become called the Rwandan Genocide.
On December 20, 2012, 18 years after the genocide, the UN-sanctioned International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) concluded its last trial and sentenced Augustin Ngirabatware, who had been the Minister of Planning, to 35 years in prison.
