Clue #3: Jack Simpson, a 22-year old soldier, became a national hero. Simpson and his donkey, Duffy, would walk through the firefight, seemingly oblivious to the danger, in order to carry the injured to safety. After 24 days of luck and saving over 300 lives, he was killed by a machine gun bullet to the back.
