The fourth Academy Awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, November 10, 1931 at the Sala D'Oro of the Biltmore Hotel. U.S. Vice President Charles Curtis attended the banquet and was one of the event's several speakers. Trying to stay up a little too late, ten-year-old Jackie Cooper, nominated for best actor, fell asleep during the ceremony.
Since the winners were kept a secret this year (only announced early to newspapers so that the late editions would have the news), the attendees were anxious to hear who won. Lawrence Grant hosted the event.
